DK Field Camera Privacy Policy
1. Who we are
This privacy policy applies to the DK Field Camera mobile app (the "App"). The App is developed and published by David Kuchel, trading as DK Squared Studio, a sole proprietor based in Germany ("we", "us", "our"). For the processing we carry out ourselves, we are the controller within the meaning of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Contact: support@dk-squared-studio.com. Our postal address is in the Impressum.
This policy covers the App only. Our website has its own privacy policy.
2. The short version
- The App has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no crash-reporting tools, and we run no servers of our own.
- Your photos, positions, addresses, project details and settings are stored on your device. We never receive them.
- To turn a position into an address, the App asks your device's address service (Google on Android, Apple on iPhone). To show the map, it loads map tiles from Google Maps.
- Photos and files go only where you send them. Shared photos carry their GPS position and details in the visible stamp and in their photo data (EXIF).
- If you email us, we use your message only to answer it.
3. Data stored only on your device
The App keeps the following in its own private storage on your device:
- your photos: the original and the stamped copy, and small preview images
- for each photo: the time and time zone, the GPS position with its accuracy and altitude, the compass direction and tilt, the address, the camera used, the template and the field values you entered
- your projects (name, number, client) and templates
- your company name, your name and your logo, if you entered them
- your settings, including language and stamp style
If you allow it in Settings → Saving photos, the original and the stamped copy are also saved to your device's photo gallery. Gallery copies are yours: they stay when you delete a photo in the App or uninstall it.
The App never sends this data to us. If you have turned on device backup or a photo backup service (such as Google Photos or iCloud Photos), your device may include the App's data or the gallery copies in your own backup, under that provider's terms. We cannot access it.
4. Location
The App uses your device's precise location while the camera screen is open, to record where each photo was taken and how accurate that position was. It stops when you leave the camera or put the App in the background. The App does not track your location in the background, and it never sends your location to us.
If you only allow approximate location, positions can be off by up to 3 km; the App tells you and records it on the photo.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR, to provide the function you use.
5. Address lookup
When a photo's template includes an Address field, the App sends that photo's coordinates to your device's address service: on Android the Geocoder of Google Play services (Google), on iPhone Apple's geocoding service. The service returns the nearest address. Without a connection, the App waits and looks the address up later.
Google or Apple process the coordinates under their own privacy policies (Google, Apple). We do not receive them. Templates without an Address field do not look up addresses.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR, to add the address you asked for.
6. Map
The Map tabs show your photos on Google Maps. While a map is open, your device loads map tiles from Google, which receives technical data such as your IP address, the area shown and device information, and may collect usage data about the map service. The positions of your photos are drawn on your device and are not sent to Google.
Google LLC is certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. See Google's Privacy Policy.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, our legitimate interest in showing your photos on a map when you open it.
7. Sharing and exporting
When you share or export photos, the App hands the files to your device's share sheet, and they go to the app or service you choose (email, Teams, a cloud folder and so on). Please note:
- the visible stamp shows what your template puts on it, for example the address, the position, your company and the project
- the photo data (EXIF) of both copies contains the GPS position, time, direction, your name and company, and template fields
- an export can include photos.csv, a table with all recorded data for each photo
The recipients and services you choose process these files under their own terms. We are not involved.
8. Your company logo
If you add a logo, you pick an image with your device's file picker. The App stores a copy on your device and draws it on new stamps. It is not sent anywhere.
9. Contacting us and "Send feedback"
"Send feedback" in the App's settings opens your own email app with a new message to support@dk-squared-studio.com. The App fills in the App version, the device model and the Android version, so we can reproduce problems. Nothing is sent unless you send the email yourself.
When you email us, we process your email address, your message and anything you choose to include, only to answer you. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR where your message concerns the App's use, and Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR otherwise. We delete the correspondence once your request is resolved, unless we are required to keep it by law.
10. Pilot distribution and crash information
During the pilot, the App is distributed through Google Play's testing programme. Google processes your Google account and install data under its own terms. The App contains no crash-reporting or analytics tools. If you have allowed your device to share usage and diagnostic data with Google, Google may give us crash reports and performance statistics, such as Android vitals in the Play Console. These contain technical information like the device model and OS version. They do not identify you to us.
11. Permissions
- Camera: to take photos.
- Location (while using the App): to record where each photo was taken.
- Photos / storage: to save the original and stamped copies to your gallery.
- Network access: for address lookup and map tiles.
12. What we don't do
- We don't show ads or use your device's advertising ID.
- We don't use analytics, tracking or profiling.
- We don't access your microphone or contacts, or your location in the background.
- We don't sell or rent personal data to anyone.
13. People in your photos
If you photograph people, or record information that identifies them, you decide what is recorded and shared. When you use the App for your work, you or your employer may be responsible for that data under data protection law. The App helps by keeping everything on your device until you share it.
14. Children
DK Field Camera is a professional tool and not designed for children. We don't knowingly collect personal data from children.
15. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access your personal data (Art. 15), to have it corrected (Art. 16) or erased (Art. 17), to restrict its processing (Art. 18), to data portability (Art. 20) and to object to processing based on our legitimate interests (Art. 21). To exercise these rights for data we hold, such as your emails, contact us at the address above.
We hold almost no personal data about you: your photos and data stay on your device. For data processed by Google or Apple, use the tools and contacts they provide.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, in particular in the EU member state where you live or work.
16. Deleting your data
The App has no account to delete. To delete your data:
- Photos: delete them in the App (Select → Delete). Gallery copies are deleted in your gallery app.
- Everything the App stored: clear the App's storage in your device settings, or uninstall the App.
- Emails to us: ask us at support@dk-squared-studio.com.
17. Changes to this policy
If the App's handling of data changes, for example if a future version adds syncing to your company's cloud storage or purchases, we will update this policy and its date before the change takes effect, and describe any new processing here first.
